Graduates of Canadian Medical Schools

All candidates must meet specific provincial and university registration requirements prior to the commencement of their training program.
A. New Canadian Medical Graduates wishing to pursue postgraduate training in a primary specialty:
The only route to a specialty program (entry level) for new Canadian medical graduates is via the CaRMS match. Candidates should contact the Undergraduate or Postgraduate office of their medical school for further details or visit the CaRMS web site at http://www.carms.ca/.
Provincial regulations prevent Canadian medical graduates to obtain their own funding (hospital or other organization) to enter a residency program or transfer to another residency program if already registered in a residency program.
Practicing physicians in Canada are not admissible to apply to the CaRMS match to pursue a new specialty; refer to section D below for options.
B. Canadian Medical Graduates (CMG) wishing to pursue postgraduate training in a Subspecialty program:
Candidates wishing to apply to a Subspecialty program must apply directly to the program of their choice and meet each program’s admissions criteria. Candidates must be currently registered in a postgraduate program in Canada or the United States and must not have practiced as an independent physician. Candidates are encouraged to communicate with the relevant program for application details and deadlines.
Residents currently enrolled in Internal Medicine who wish to apply to the R4 Medicine Subspecialty match must apply through CaRMS.

Practicing physicians wishing to pursue a new specialty: refer to section D below for options.
C. Canadian Medical Graduates wishing to pursue a Clinical Fellowship:
Certified physicians may wish to pursue a Clinical Fellowship (6 months to 3 years) to learn a new skill ,or simply to obtain added competence to enhance their practice. Candidates must complete and submit the PGME application form and include the following:
- CV
- Copy of medical degree
- Copy of RCPSC certification
- Proof of Permanent Resident status (if applicable)
- pply directly to the program of their choice and are encouraged to communicate with the relevant program for application details and deadlines.
Clinical Fellowship appointments do not lead to any type of national certificaiton. Candidates applying to a Subspecialty program must apply for a residency position.
D. Canadian Medical Graduates wishing to undergo a new residency/specialty:
Physicians currently practicing in Canada or the USA may wish to change their area of specialty (undergo a new residency for eventual certification) may be admissible to apply to the Ontario Ministry of Health & Long term Care Re-entry program. This program is specifically designed for practicing physicians wishing to change specialties and willing to sign a return to service agreement in an under serviced area with the MOHLTC. Candidates must communicate directly with the Ministry of Health for information. Canadian Medical Graduates currently training in the United States:
Canadian medical graduates who are currently enrolled in a residency program in the United States may qualify for the Ontario Ministry of health & Long Term Care’s Repatriation Program. This program is designed for candidates who may require a further six months to 2 years of Canadian residency education to meet the certification requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Please review the terms of the Repatriation program and if you wish to apply, submit the following documentation for consideration by fax transmission, mail or email scan to:
